George Washington Expands Mount Vernon

Two years later a large two-story room was added to the north side.[13] Two single-story secondary wings were built in 1775. These secondary wings, which house the servants hall on the northern side and the kitchen on the southern side, are connected to the corps de logis by symmetrical, quadrant colonnades, built in 1778. The completion of the colonnades cemented the classical Palladian arrangement of the complex and formed a distinct cour d'honneur, known at Mount Vernon as Mansion Circle, giving the house its imposing perspective. In 1858, the house's historical importance was recognized and was taken over by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which it along with part of the Washington property estate.

Lee’s plantation were set free, their families returned from across the country to reunite with each other and their history. While the Washingtons were known fans of cherries, the picking and storage of the two bottles likely never touched their hands as the site was known to have over 300 enslaved individuals at the time of George Washington’s death. The glass bottles are from a European manufacturer and archaeologists say, based on shape and style, likely from the 1740s or 1750s, which fits the timeline of needing to be placed in the pit prior to the 1770s floor installation.
